Symposium examining the reporting of civilians affected by conflict in the British media

The "People on War" survey for the UK will be released on 12 December 2007 at the Foreign Press Association, as part of a seminar organised by the British Red Cross.

Members of the British public were asked for their opinions on a number of issues such as acceptable tactics in war, treatment of enemy combatants, and UK interventions abroad. The 2007 People on War survey compares the results with those of a similar survey first done in 1999, and examines whether attitudes to conflict have changed in Britain in the intervening years.

The survey was commissioned by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1977 Additional Protocols to the Geneva Conventions that seek to reinforce the protection of civilians in conflict.

ICRC Director of Communication Yves Daccord will be in London to debate the survey findings with Hugo Slim, humanitarian advisor and author of the book "Killing Civilians: Method, Madness and Morality in War".
