Bakool region. An ICRC water delivery.
Armed conflict intensified during 2007 in central and southern Somalia, plunging the population into deeper poverty and reliance on outside aid. Thousands of civilians have been killed and hundreds of thousands forced to flee their homes.
The ICRC concentrates its operational presence where armed clashes are recurrent and essential services are inexistent. Through a large spectrum of activities in health, economic security, water and rehabilitation targeted primarily at the rural population, the ICRC actively responds to the complex emergency situations through a network of experienced and qualified national staff, and through its partnership with the Somali Red Crescent Society (SRCS). It provides emergency relief materials, supports emergency surgical services that care for those injured by weapons, restores the basic infrastructure in weakened communities and supports the SRCS in its delivery of services. 25-8-2008 Somalia: sparing people from the spears – how a radio show can save livesThe ICRC, the Somali Red Crescent Society and local radio stations have together initiated a series of radio spots aimed at spreading public awareness of the Somali customary code of war, known as ‘Biri-ma-Geydo’ (literally, spared from the spear), and the basics of international humanitarian law.
