The story of an idea, is an exciting new publication which brings to life the story of the birth of the Red Cross, Red Crescent Movement and its history to date. This comic strip was created by the world renowned artist Jean Giraud, alias Moebius.

The Red Cross, Red Crescent Movement is present on almost all of today's battlefields working to save lives and alleviate human suffering. How do the different components of such a large network work together to acheive this? This brochure provides general information on the various ways that the ICRC cooperates with National Societies worldwide. Since they were adopted, the red cross and red crescent emblems have provided protection to millions of war victims but they have also given rise to repeated difficulties and virtually continuous debate. The aim of this article is to recount the history of the emblem issue and to outline the strategy and steps followed in solving a problem that had remained pending for far too long. The article takes account of the developments up to 15 January 2007.

Since it was first published in 1862, the book has been translated into so many languages and reprinted so many times that it is difficult to know how many versions exist throughout the world.
